Reduce the gas consumption in the federal fleet by 20 percent

Bush is urging everyone to cut gas consumption by 20 percent. Do you plan on following suit? If so, how are you planning on cutting gas consumption, other than by carpooling?

Reuters: "Environmentalists said Bush's call for reducing gasoline consumption was a positive step but not enough to combat global warming."

Do you think that the government will reduce gas consumption be even 20%?

They won't reduce it by even 5% beyond what the market would do by itself simply from high fuel prices. If they actually cared about gas consumption they would add very large federal taxes on all fuel, with 100% of proceeds going toward rapid energy isolation.

And no, that doesn't include biodiesel. Do we really want our fuel to compete for our food source? The "waste" from crops really isn't waste at all -- those corn stalks, bean plants, and wheat stalks are tilled back into the fields to provide for the next year of crops. If you take that away and burn it or turn it into fuel, you are quickly depleting our arable land much like they do in the Amazon, where you only get a decade tops out of each field before no viable crops can be grown.

I agree.  If the market changes then people will adjust.  More will use mass transit and other forms of transportation.  One idea that has been brought up here in the Toronto area is a toll for everyone entering the city by car.  Considering most of car polution is created in and around big cities, this would be effective, without affecting people in rural areas.  I hear this works well in London.
